Identification and classification of spine vertebrae by automated methods

چکیده
We are currently working toward developing computer-assisted methods for the indexing of a collection of 17,000 digitized x-ray images by biomedical content. These images were collected as part of a nationwide health survey and form a research resource for osteoarthitis and bone morphometry. This task requires the development of algorithms to robustly analyze the xray contents for key landmarks, to segment the vertebral bodies, to accurately measure geometric features of the individual vertebrae and inter-vertebral areas, and to classify the spine anatomy into normal or abnormal classes for conditions of interest, including anterior osteophytes and disc space narrowing. Subtasks of this work have been created and divided among collaborators. In this paper, we provide a technical description of the overall task, report on progress made by collaborators, and provide the most recent results of our own research into obtaining first-order location of the spine region of interest by automated methods. We are currently concentrating on images of the cervical spine, but will expand the work to include the lumbar spine as well. Development of successful image processing techniques for computer-assisted indexing of medical image collections is expected to have a significant impact within the medical research and patient care systems.

Identification of selected monogeneans using image processing, artificial neural network and K-nearest neighbor
Abstract Over the last two decades, improvements in developing computational tools made significant contributions to the classification of biological specimens` images to their correspondence species. These days, identification of biological species is much easier for taxonomist and even non-taxonomists due to the development of automated computer techniques and systems. In this study, we d...
متن کاملMicro-computed tomography-based highly automated 3D segmentation of the rat spine for quantitative analysis of metastatic disease.
Noninvasive evaluation of metastatic disease in the spine has generally been limited to 2D qualitative or semiquantitative analysis techniques. This study aims to develop and evaluate a highly automated micro-CT-based quantitative analysis tool that can measure the architectural impact of metastatic involvement in whole vertebrae. Micro-CT analysis of rat whole vertebrae was conducted using a c...

Background: Spinal cord injury (SCI) is one of the main causes of severe disability and mortality following trauma. Complications and outcomes of patients with spine trauma, especially those who undergo surgery, are a less divulged topic in Iran. Therefore, we designed the present study to evaluate complications and outcomes of patients with traumatic spine in Poursina hospital of Rasht. Mater...
متن کاملSegmentation and feature extraction of cervical spine x-ray images
As part of an R&D project in mixed text/image database design, the National Library of Medicine has archived a collection of 17,000 digitized x-ray images of the cervical and lumbar spine which were collected as part of the second National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES II). To make this image data available and usable to a wide audience, we are investigating techniques for ind...
متن کاملBtrfly Net: Vertebrae Labelling with Energy-based Adversarial Learning of Local Spine Prior
Robust localisation and identification of vertebrae is an essential part of automated spine analysis. The contribution of this work to the task is two-fold: (1) Inspired by the human expert, we hypothesise that a sagittal and coronal reformation of the spine contain sufficient information for labelling the vertebrae. Thereby, we propose a butterflyshaped network architecture (termed Btrfly Net)...
